ARTIST STATEMENT

Why do certain objects carry meaning?

For my quilt piece, I recreated the design of a coin purse given to me by my paternal grandmother (mémère), Maria, before she passed away when I was five. The original coin purse is not fancy. It is made from polyester fabric with a “beading” pattern made of dots of colourful plastic hot-glued onto its surface. Many of the beads have fallen off and the fabric is disintegrating. Still, this memento activates stories I’ve learned about her life.
