In 2013, I was invited to be the Sculpture Representative for Team Canada at Les 7ième jeux de la francophonie in Nice, France. For my part in the sculpture competition, I was asked to present a work for a group exhibition in Nice as well as to create a new work in a 5-day competition that was open to the public. My fellow competitors included 20 artists from all over the work. We were judged on both the work we presented in the group exhibition and the new work we created on site. They set up a makeshift studio in a series of conference rooms at the Acropolis of Nice where 20 competitors from each discipline (Sculpture, Painting, and Photo) worked alongside each other. Chatting, making, discussing, seeing each others' ways of creating art.
Penelope was created for this competition. I had access only to the tools and materials that were provided to me by the organizers and this was an interesting limitation to have imposed on our creative processes. Interestingly, the stringing of the sculpture became a sort of performance in itself where the public seemed intrigued to ask me questions about what I was doing. This often made for interesting interactions and sharing of ideas.
